The Best of Beaumont

G Beaumont

Geoffrey Beaumont was one of the founders of the 20th century light music group and wrote many singable tunes to established hymns in the 1950/60s. Some of his tunes are still in use today and five of the most popular are featured in this selection, including perhaps his best known to the words of 'O JESUS I HAVE PROMISED’.

Where is the wildlife? (That lived in the woods)

The second composition of the two is concerned with the wildlife that lived in the countryside before the developers took over. In this piece the Solo Horn takes up the rhythm of the words in the title, the theme is then developed in a variety of ways by the rest of the band.

Where is the woodland? (The fields and the flowers)

This is the first of two pieces written to highlight the plight of many British villages that are losing their countryside to urbanisation. After a calm start the developers move in and the piece gets busy, a trombone solo echoes the rhythm of the words in the title before the whole band takes up the cause.

Let him go, let him tarry

Irish trad.

A lively traditional Irish tune is here given a rhythmic update, each section of the band taking the lead in turn. Each section has a contrasting arrangement starting with the trombones in harmony and ending with a big finale for the full band.

Where did you get that hat?

A very popular Victorian music-hall song is given a bit of a jolt in this full bodied rhythmic arrangement. Nobody in the audience will drop off during this piece, the drummer alone will see to that.

As the title suggests the piece is based primarily on major and minor 3rds used in various guises and sprinkled amongst each section of the band.

(Wait) your time will come

JL

An original composition, the opening theme is based on the rhythm of the words in the title and is first heard played slowly and quietly on three trombones, increasing in speed as the cornets take up the tune. The second theme is started by the Eb horns and gradually developed into a full band sound ending with a big classical style ending.

18th Variation on a theme of Paganini

S Rachmaninoff

This beautiful and well known piece originally for piano and orchestra is arranged here for brass band. Most of the piano arpeggios are in the middle parts of the band whilst the top cornets have the gorgeous melody.
A little tricky but well worth the effort.

Red Sails in the Sunset (Trombone solo)

H Williams & J Kennedy

The sonorous sound of the trombone portrays the melancholy of the girl whose lover has gone to sea and in the distance she can see the setting sun shining through the white sails of his boat.
The piece features a calm beginning but later the band take up a more animated rhythm which is played against the smooth solo line.

Regatta (Selection)

M Wild

Michael Wild (who died in November 2018), composed over forty stage musicals, this is a selection of tunes from one of his shows which was originally written to be performed during Regatta week in Henley-on-Thames. Henry Fielding (impresario) once said that Michael had a rare talent for writing tunes that people can easily remember. This selection proves the point.

Looking from the window of a fast moving train hedgerows rush past, often unkempt and occasionally interrupted by the sudden appearance of a tree, a gate or a fence. This piece attempts to reflect the passing countryside in music.

The Mermaid

The Mermaid is a popular sea shanty that tells the tale of a sailing ship the crew of which are warned by a mermaid (with a comb and a glass in her hand) that the ship will sink before the end of her voyage. It’s a very sprightly tune for such a grizzly tale.
